A rectangular advertisement displayed on a webpage, usually ignored by 99.95% of viewers but somehow still a multi-billion dollar industry.

First banner ad served in 1994 on Hotwired.com, pioneering web advertising.
Fun Fact
The first banner ad achieved a 78% CTR, but that was before banner blindness became a psychological phenomenon.
