work-to-rest ratio

Intermediate ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

The relationship between exercise duration and recovery time in interval training, like 1:3 meaning 20 seconds work and 60 seconds rest. It's the mathematical expression of how much suffering you can handle before needing to catch your breath.

Example Usage

The HIIT session used a 1:2 work-to-rest ratio, providing just enough recovery to go hard again without full restoration.

Origin

From interval training methodology and exercise programming

Fun Fact

Different work-to-rest ratios train different energy systems: 1:1 builds lactate tolerance while 1:3+ develops power, proving that rest is just as programmable as work.
