Definition
A mechanical device that projects 35mm photographic slides onto a screen or wall by passing light through mounted transparencies and using a lens to enlarge and focus the image. Slide projectors were the standard for sharing photographs before digital displays.
Example Usage
Dad set up the slide projector in the living room to show vacation photos from our trip to Yellowstone.
Origin
Combines 'slide' (the mounted transparency) and 'projector' (from Latin 'projectare,' to throw forward).
Fun Fact
Slide shows were a dominant form of home entertainment from the 1950s through 1990s; the phrase 'death by PowerPoint' echoes the tedium of sitting through endless personal slide presentations.
