Definition
Focusing on the eccentric (lowering) phase of a movement, often using more weight than you can lift, then having a spotter help you back to the starting position. It's advanced training that looks like you need help because you do.
Example Usage
We did negative reps on the bench press by loading 25% more weight than my 1RM and slowly lowering it over 3 seconds.
Origin
Popularized in bodybuilding and strength training; researched extensively since the 1970s.
Fun Fact
Eccentric training creates more muscle damage and soreness than concentric work, driving excellent hypertrophy—but it's more taxing on joints and the nervous system.
