Definition

A sturdy, naturally yellow or buff-colored cotton fabric originating from Nanjing, China, often used for trousers and other garments. Also called nankin or nankin cotton.

Example Usage

The merchant displayed bolts of fine nankeen alongside silks and other imported luxuries.

Named after Nanjing (formerly Nanking), China, where the fabric was traditionally produced and exported.

Fun Fact

Nankeen became highly fashionable in Europe and America in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly for summer trousers and children's clothing.
