Definition
A Senate procedure to end debate and force a vote, because apparently some senators needed legally mandated permission to stop talking. Democracy requires a traffic cop.
Example Usage
The minority leader requested closure on the amendment to prevent further debate.
Origin
From 'closure' in the sense of 'bringing to an end,' formalized in Senate rules in 1917
Fun Fact
It takes 60 votes to invoke closure in the modern Senate, which is why everyone talks about 'the 60-vote threshold'
