Definition
The seemingly endless series of small, distracting tasks you must complete before you can accomplish your actual goal. You started wanting to fix a button, now you're rewriting the entire authentication system.
Example Usage
I just wanted to add a feature flag, but now I'm yak shaving—upgrading the entire config library because it's incompatible with our monitoring tool.
Origin
Coined by Carlin Vieri at MIT in the 1990s, popularized by Seth Godin; inspired by a Ren & Stimpy episode
Fun Fact
The term comes from a hypothetical scenario where you need to borrow a hose to wash your car, but first you need to fix the shed door, which requires a screwdriver from your neighbor, who will only lend it if you shave their yak.
