The variety of different people in an organization in terms of race, gender, age, ability, and other characteristics. Measured extensively, reported optimistically, ignored in promotion decisions.

Example Usage

The company proudly announced 45% women in the workforce; they didn't mention only 12% of women were in director roles or above.

Origin

Emerged as a formal concept in the 1960s-70s with civil rights movements; modernized as 'diversity metrics' in 1990s-2000s.

Fun Fact

Diversity without inclusion is just making the office look good in annual reports while maintaining the same power structures.
