valsalva maneuver

Advanced ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

The act of holding your breath and bearing down during heavy lifts to increase intra-abdominal pressure and spinal stability. Basically, constipation but make it athletic.

Example Usage

Use the valsalva maneuver at the bottom of your squat for maximum core stability.

Origin

Named after Italian anatomist Antonio Maria Valsalva who described it in 1704, applied to weightlifting in the 20th century.

Fun Fact

The valsalva maneuver can increase blood pressure dramatically and cause temporary vision disturbances ('seeing stars'), but it's still safer than not bracing during heavy lifts.
