redcon

Intermediate 🎖️ Military / Defense

Definition

Readiness Condition—numerical scale (typically 1-4) indicating unit preparedness to execute mission, where REDCON 1 means 'ready to roll now' and REDCON 4 means 'we're basically civilians at this point.'

Example Usage

Battalion is at REDCON 2—vehicles loaded, personnel equipped, ready to move within 30 minutes of notification.

Origin

U.S. military readiness reporting system

Fun Fact

Units spend inordinate time gaming the REDCON system, because commanders want to report high readiness while avoiding the additional duties that come with actually being that ready.
