Definition

A manuscript or document that has been written over or reused after earlier text has been scraped off or bleached away. Metaphorically, it refers to anything with visible layers of past history layered beneath current appearances.

Origin

From Greek 'palimpsestos' ('scraped again'), derived from 'palin' (again) and 'psestos' (scraped).
