Definition
The privilege to attend board meetings without voting power, typically granted to smaller investors or advisors. All the tedious meetings with none of the actual authority—basically a corporate internship.
Example Usage
As an angel investor, I negotiated observer rights so I could attend board meetings and at least know what was happening to my money.
Origin
Corporate governance practice for accommodating non-board stakeholders
Fun Fact
Observer rights sound worthless but are actually valuable—you get insider information without fiduciary liability if everything goes sideways.
