Definition

Colloquial term for the cheapest, highest-up seats in a stadium or large venue, so-called because of their extreme distance from the action and the metaphorical idea that one might be so high up as to suffer from altitude-related nosebleeds.

Example Usage

We could only afford nosebleed seats for the Super Bowl, but we still had an amazing time.

Origin

Emerged in mid-20th century sports vernacular, referencing the stadium's upper decks.

Fun Fact

Some modern stadiums have eliminated nosebleed sections in renovations, instead using luxury suites and club seating to replace the highest rows.
