Definition

An officer who previously served as enlisted personnel, theoretically possessing both leadership credentials and actual knowledge of how things work. Often viewed with suspicion by traditional officers and grudging respect by enlisted troops.

Example Usage

The new CO is a mustangโ€”twenty years enlisted before commissioning, so good luck trying to snow him with excuses.

Origin

U.S. military slang from the early 20th century, referencing wild horses tamed for service

Fun Fact

Mustang officers are relatively rare (about 10-15% of the officer corps) but disproportionately respected because they've actually been on the receiving end of bad officer decisions.
