mobility

Intermediate ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

The ability to actively move a joint through its full range of motion with control. Not to be confused with flexibility, which is just passive range and doesn't require you to control anything.

Example Usage

My yoga teacher keeps reminding me that flexibility without mobility is just being a bendy noodle with no structural integrity.

Origin

From Latin 'mobilis' meaning movable; distinction from flexibility emphasized in modern movement training

Fun Fact

You can be flexible but have poor mobility—think of someone who can do the splits but can't squat below parallel with control.
