Definition
An astronomical event in which the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting Earth's shadow on the lunar surface and darkening the Moon. This occurs only during a full moon when the three celestial bodies are aligned.
Example Usage
We stayed up late to watch the lunar eclipse, and the Moon turned a deep red color during totality.
Origin
From Latin 'lunaris' (of the Moon) and 'eclipsis' (failure or abandonment), referring to the Moon's temporary disappearance from view.
Fun Fact
A lunar eclipse can last up to 3.5 hours, and the Moon often appears reddish during totality due to Earth's atmosphere bending sunlight around the planet.
