Definition

A guiding principle, inspiration, or reference point that directs one's actions or decisions; originally, the star used by navigators for orientation at sea. In modern usage, it refers metaphorically to any constant source of guidance or aspiration.

From Middle English 'lode' (course or journey) and 'star'; Polaris was the traditional lodestar for northern hemisphere navigation.

Fun Fact
