Definition
A triangular or diamond-shaped piece of material sewn into a garment or structure to reinforce it, increase capacity, or improve fit, commonly found in the crotch of pants or between sleeves and body of shirts. Gussets add both strength and flexibility to otherwise weak seam points.
Example Usage
The work pants had reinforced gussets that made them ideal for climbing and moving around on job sites.
Origin
From Old French 'gousset' (armpit), originally referring to the armor piece protecting the armpit area.
Fun Fact
Modern athletic brands invest heavily in gusset engineering—a well-designed gusset in activewear can increase mobility by up to 20% while adding durability.
