Definition
Pre-planned defensive fire designed to stop an enemy assault at the last possible moment, typically right at the defensive position's perimeter. The 'break glass in case of emergency' of fire plans.
Example Usage
If they breach the wire, call for final protective fire on coordinates we registered this morning.
Origin
Defensive tactics terminology dating to World War I when fixed defenses required desperate measures
Fun Fact
Final protective fire is often placed so close to friendly positions that it's essentially danger close by default—because if you're calling for it, subtlety is no longer a concern.
