Eccentric Training

Intermediate ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

Exercise focusing on the lengthening phase of muscle contraction, where you fight gravity (like lowering a weight). Technically the hardest phase, though it looks like you're just being lazy.

Example Usage

Eccentric squats—where I lower the barbell for 3 seconds—absolutely destroy me, but they build strength effectively.

Origin

Biomechanics terminology; popularized in strength training during the 1980s-1990s.

Fun Fact

Eccentric exercise causes more DOMS and produces greater strength gains per unit of effort than concentric training.
