Definition

A portable personal CD player produced by Sony starting in 1984 that played compact discs and was popular through the 1990s and early 2000s. It represented a major shift from Walkman cassette players to digital music.

Example Usage

Before iPods, I carried my Discman everywhere, even though skipping still damaged the disc.

Origin

A portmanteau of 'disc' and 'man,' following Sony's naming convention with the Walkman.

Fun Fact

The original Discman could skip tracks when jostled due to the laser's sensitivity to movement, leading to numerous technical improvements over its product lifespan.
