Definition
Statistical characteristics of a population (age, gender, income, location, education) used to define and target audience segments. The lazy marketer's first attempt at precision.
Example Usage
Our demographic targeting reached 35-year-old men with $100K+ income, which in our market meant reaching three actual people and a bot.
Origin
From Greek 'demos' (people) and 'graphia' (description); popularized in marketing in the 1970s.
Fun Fact
Demographic targeting alone has become nearly useless in 2024; psychographic and behavioral data now predict behavior 3-5x better.
