Definition

The collection of unwritten rules, forced fun, and motivational posters that define what it's like to work somewhere. It's what the company says it values on the website versus what actually happens in the breakroom. These two things have never met.

"Our corporate culture values work-life balance. The email about it was sent at 11:47 PM on a Saturday." - A culturally confused employee

The act of keeping employees from fleeing to competitors, usually achieved through a combination of competitive salaries, stock options, free snacks, and the vague promise of 'culture.' When used in legal contexts, it refers to paying someone a retainer so they'll actually return your calls. Both definitions involve spending money to prevent abandonment.

The corporate euphemism for 'bad stuff we can't ignore anymore' that covers everything from expense fraud to harassment to using the company printer for your side hustle. It's what HR calls your behavior when they're building a paper trail for your termination. Comes in various flavors: professional, sexual, and the ever-popular 'gross misconduct' which means you're definitely getting fired.

Performance Improvement Plan—often the final step before termination disguised as developmental support. Plural form emphasizes that these are being distributed liberally, usually during reorganizations.

allowances

The corporate world's way of saying 'here's some extra cash for specific things' without calling it a raise. This could be travel allowances, housing allowances, or that sweet per diem that employees definitely use exactly as intended. In accounting, it's also shorthand for 'money we've set aside because we know something will probably go wrong.'
