Definition

A career track for technical or specialist employees to advance and earn senior titles without becoming managers, recognizing that not everyone wants to manage people.

Example Usage

As a Principal Engineer (IC), she manages major technical initiatives but doesn't have direct reports.

Origin

Developed in tech companies starting in the 1990s as an alternative to the up-or-out management ladder.

Fun Fact

IC career paths are supposed to be equivalent to management tracks but are often treated as second-class paths in reality.
