Clover

Beginner 🍳 Food / Culinary

Definition

A common plant of the legume family with three-leafed foliage, often found in lawns and pastures, or used symbolically (especially the four-leaf variety) to represent luck. It's also used colloquially to refer to comfort, prosperity, or "easy street" when someone is "in clover."

Example Usage

After winning the lottery, he felt like he was living in clover.

Origin

Old English 'clæfre,' from Proto-Germanic roots; the lucky association comes from the rarity of four-leaf mutations.

Fun Fact

Four-leaf clovers occur in about 1 in 5,000 plants, making them genuinely rare finds.
