Definition
Cancer that hasn't invaded beyond the epithelial layer yet—basically, pre-invasive cancer. Early catch, high cure rates. It's cancer's warning level before things get serious.

The cervical biopsy showed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3, considered carcinoma in situ.

From Latin 'carcinoma' (cancer) and 'in situ' (in place)
Fun Fact
CIS treatments often involve much less aggressive surgery than invasive cancer, with 5-year survival rates exceeding 90%.
