Definition

An acronym for Bulletin Board System, a computer system accessible via dial-up modem that allowed users to connect, download files, post messages, and play games in the pre-internet era. BBSes were the primary means of online community and file sharing from the late 1970s through the early 1990s.

I spent hours after school calling into different BBSes to download warez and chat with other users.

Origin

Named after traditional physical bulletin boards where people posted community notices, adapted to the digital realm.

Fun Fact

At the peak of BBS popularity in the late 1980s, there were an estimated 60,000 BBSes operating in North America alone.
