A medieval and ancient philosophical and protoscientific practice that attempted to transform base metals into gold and discover the elixir of life. Though it failed at its literal goals, alchemy contributed to the foundations of modern chemistry and continues to appear metaphorically in literature and culture.

Origin
From Arabic 'al-kīmiyā,' which itself may derive from Greek 'chemia' (art of metalworking) or Egyptian 'kēme' (black earth).
