White-Out

Definition

A brand-name liquid correction fluid used to cover typing or writing errors on paper, typically applied with a small brush applicator and allowed to dry before writing over it. The generic term for this type of product is correction fluid.

Origin

Trademarked by Bette Nesmith Graham in 1956; she originally called it 'Mistake Out' before renaming it to White-Out.

Fun Fact

Bette Nesmith Graham, a secretary and painter, invented correction fluid by experimenting with tempera paint in her kitchen, then sold the company to Gillette in 1979 for $47.5 million.
