The first use of the term likely occurred in 2002, but it rose to prominence during the 2006 World Cup, when the media often used WAGs to refer to Victoria Beckham (wife of David Beckham), Cheryl Cole (now Cheryl Ann Tweedy, former wife of Ashley Cole), and other notable footballers' paramours.
