Definition

Expressing each financial statement line item as a percentage of a base figure, like revenue or total assets. It's financial statements in relative terms, making it easier to spot when expenses are getting out of hand.

Example Usage

The vertical analysis showed that while absolute costs increased, our cost of goods sold actually declined from 68% to 64% of revenue.

Standard financial analysis technique developed alongside ratio analysis in early 20th century

Fun Fact

Vertical analysis is also called 'common-size' analysis because it puts companies of different sizes on a comparable basis—a $10M and $10B company can be analyzed identically.
