Unicorn Rounding

Intermediate 🚀 Startup / VC

Definition

The practice of startups claiming metrics that are wildly inflated—counting beta users as paying customers, or DAU as monthly recurring. It's lying, but with venture capital.

Example Usage

Our competitor is doing serious unicorn rounding: they claim 100K users but only 5K paid ones, and they're counting the free trial as recurring revenue.

Origin

Emerged as a pejorative term during the late 2010s bubble

Fun Fact

This became so common that sophisticated VCs now do their own research instead of trusting founder metrics
