Definition

A golden-yellow spice derived from the rhizome of a flowering plant native to South Asia, widely used in curry powders and traditional medicine. It contains curcumin, an active compound believed to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Origin

From Arabic kurkum, which may have Sanskrit origins; the plant name is Curcuma longa.
