Civil wrongs that aren't quite crimes but are definitely lawsuit-worthy, like negligence, defamation, or that time your neighbor's tree fell on your car. This entire area of law exists so people can sue each other for damages without anyone going to jail. Law students memorize endless tort cases with names like "Palsgraf v. Long Island Railroad," learning that the legal system has opinions about literally everything that can go wrong between humans.

First-year law students spend an entire semester studying torts, discovering that almost any misfortune can theoretically be someone else's legal problem.

The white-collar crime where trusted employees prove they can't be trusted by helping themselves to company funds. It's theft with extra steps and a fancier vocabulary, typically involving someone with financial access who decides their employer's money would look better in their own account. Unlike robbery, embezzlement requires both access and the audacity to pretend it's totally normal to redirect corporate funds to your offshore vacation fund.

The civilized alternative to settling disputes with pitchforks and torches, where disagreeing parties ask a judge (and possibly a jury) to decide who's right using an absurdly expensive process involving lawyers, paperwork, and years of your life. It's basically formalized arguing with filing fees. The grown-up version of 'I'm telling Mom' except Mom wears a robe and has a gavel.
