the wall

Intermediate ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

The sudden and devastating energy depletion that occurs when your glycogen stores run empty, typically around mile 20 of a marathon. Your legs turn to concrete and every step becomes an existential negotiation.

Example Usage

I was on track for a 3:30 marathon until I hit the wall at mile 22 and spent the last four miles questioning all my life choices.

Origin

Marathon running, describing the point where muscle glycogen depletes and the body switches to fat metabolism

Fun Fact

The marathon distance of 26.2 miles was chosen partly because it's just beyond where most runners' glycogen stores deplete.
