Definition
A condescending euphemism used to dismiss academic work as disconnected from practical concerns, as if universities exist in an alternate dimension where food, rent, and consequences don't exist. Usually invoked by people who couldn't survive a semester of graduate school.
Example Usage
He kept saying my PhD wouldn't prepare me for 'the real world,' as if teaching 200 undergraduates while making poverty wages isn't reality.
Origin
Anti-intellectual discourse, weaponized against academia since at least the mid-20th century
Fun Fact
Academics have reclaimed the phrase ironically, noting that universities involve very real budgets, politics, and precarious labor conditions.
