Definition
A four-dimensional geometric shape, analogous to how a cube is three-dimensional; also called an 8-cell or octachoron. A tesseract cannot be fully visualized in three-dimensional space, but can be represented through projections or cross-sections that appear as nested cubes.

In the science fiction novel, the characters traveled through a tesseract to access higher dimensions.
Origin
Coined in 1888 by Charles Howard Hinton, a mathematician; from Greek 'tasseres' (four) + 'akis' (ray), constructed in parallel with 'octahedron' or similar terms
