Definition
A class of organic compounds produced by many plants, consisting of five-carbon isoprene units; responsible for the characteristic aromas and flavors of many plants and their essential oils. Terpenes are found in cannabis, citrus, pine, and thousands of other plant species.
Example Usage
The limonene terpene in lemon oil gives it its distinctive citrus scent.
Origin
From German Terpentin (turpentine), coined in the 1880s when chemists identified these compounds as components of turpentine and other plant resins.
Fun Fact
Cannabis contains over 100 identified terpenes, and researchers believe these compounds work synergistically with cannabinoids in what's called the 'entourage effect,' though this remains scientifically debated.
