Definition

A system of classification that organizes organisms, concepts, or information into hierarchical categories based on shared characteristics; in biology, it arranges life forms from broad kingdoms down to specific species.

Example Usage

The scientist used a complex taxonomy to categorize the newly discovered species of insects.

Origin

From Greek 'taxis' (arrangement or order) and 'nomos' (law or system).

Fun Fact

Carl Linnaeus created the binomial nomenclature system in the 1750s, which remains the foundation of biological taxonomy today.
