Definition
A small digital pet toy released in 1996 that requires constant care and feeding, or by extension, anything demanding frequent attention and maintenance. The virtual pet would "die" if neglected, creating a miniature simulation of responsibility that became a global phenomenon.
Example Usage
My houseplant is basically a Tamagotchi—if I don't water it every few days, it's gone.
Origin
From Japanese tamago (egg) + watch; created by Bandai, the name combines the device's egg-like shape with its wristwatch form factor.
Fun Fact
The original Tamagotchi was designed to appeal to girls in Japan, positioning digital pet care as an alternative to traditional toys, and it sparked the virtual pet craze of the 1990s.
