Definition
In architecture, the triangular space between the curve of an arch and the rectangular frame that surrounds it, or the space between arches in a series. In statistics, it refers to a byproduct or correlate of an adaptation that was not itself selected for.
Example Usage
The ornate carvings on the spandrels between the arches were the building's most striking feature.

From Old French 'spandre' (to spread or expand), describing how the architectural element spans the gap.
