A decorative novelty item consisting of a clear glass or plastic dome filled with liquid and artificial snow (or similar particles) surrounding a small figurine or scene. When shaken, the particles swirl around, creating a picturesque snowing effect.

Origin
The snow globe as we know it was patented in 1927 by Erwin Perzy in Austria; however, similar water-filled novelties existed in the 19th century.
Fun Fact
The liquid inside traditional snow globes is often a mixture of water and glycerin or corn syrup, which slows the fall of the snow particles to create a more realistic and longer-lasting effect.
