Definition

A secret, often unauthorized military or defense project operating outside normal bureaucratic channels. Half-affectionate, half-ominous in implication.

Rumors about a new stealth fighter design were reportedly coming from Skunk Works operations in the Nevada desert.

Origin

Originated from Lockheed Martin's classified aerospace division, famous for developing the U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird.

Fun Fact

The original Lockheed Skunk Works was located next to a plastic plant that smelled so bad they named it after a cartoon still.
