Definition

Assessment of the difference between current employee capabilities and those required for organizational goals. Also known as 'realizing we hired people for jobs we never defined.'

Example Usage

The skill gap analysis revealed our team needed AI expertise, cloud architecture, and data science—skills we hadn't mentioned during hiring.

Origin

Emerged from HR planning and competency development in the 1990s.

Fun Fact

Most skill gap analyses conclude you should train existing employees, which is cheaper than hiring, then proceed to hire anyway because training takes time.
