Shrinky Dinks

Definition

Thin plastic sheets printed with designs that children color and then bake in an oven, causing them to shrink to about one-third their original size while becoming thicker and more rigid. Popular craft toy from the 1970s onward.

Example Usage

We spent the afternoon coloring Shrinky Dinks, and watching them curl up and shrink in the oven was the most satisfying part.

Origin

Invented in the 1970s by Kate Winn; the name is a trademarked brand now owned by Basic Fun.

Fun Fact

The shrinking process works because the plastic is stretched during manufacturing, and heat causes it to return to its original dimensions, concentrating the ink and plastic density.
