Definition
Technology systems and solutions built and used inside organizations without IT department approval or knowledge. Usually created by frustrated employees who got tired of waiting for the official three-year approval process to get Slack.
Example Usage
Marketing has been running their entire campaign on shadow IT infrastructure—a dozen unsanctioned cloud services our security team doesn't even know about.
Origin
Term emerged in the 2000s as cloud services made it easy for non-IT departments to deploy their own solutions
Fun Fact
Studies suggest 30-40% of enterprise IT spending is now shadow IT, meaning IT departments are governing less than they think and worrying more than they should.
