RPM

Intermediate ⚽ Sports / Fitness

Definition

Revolutions Per Minute—the cadence or speed at which you pedal a bike or strike a running tempo. Cyclists obsess over this; runners less so.

Example Usage

I maintain an RPM of 90 on the bike to optimize efficiency and minimize joint stress.

Origin

Mechanical/engineering term applied to cycling and fitness.

Fun Fact

Optimal cycling cadence is around 85-100 RPM for most people; pedaling slower uses more muscle force but less aerobic power, while faster uses less muscle but more aerobic power.
