resuscitate

Beginner 🏥 Healthcare / Medical

Definition

To revive someone from unconsciousness or apparent death using medical interventions ranging from CPR to defibrillation. Literally bringing people back from the edge, though Hollywood success rates are vastly inflated.

Example Usage

We resuscitated him three times during the code, but eventually even heroic measures couldn't overcome massive trauma.

Origin

From Latin 're-' (again) and 'suscitare' (to raise up), used medically since 16th century

Fun Fact

The term 'resuscitate' implies bringing back to life, but medically you're usually restarting a heart that stopped, not reversing actual death—subtle but important distinction.
