Definition
A legal action to recover personal property wrongfully taken or detained, allowing you to get your stuff back through court order rather than just breaking in (which is illegal).
Example Usage
The creditor filed a replevin action to recover the car the debtor had purchased on credit and then hidden.
Origin
From Old French 'replevin,' meaning to pledge again or to recover
Fun Fact
Self-help replevin, where one party simply takes back their own property, is increasingly restricted by modern law
