Definition

A long-term lockup for people who committed serious crimes—essentially a compound where society warehouses its most inconvenient citizens for extended stays, complete with cells, guards, and absolutely zero hospitality. It's what happens when 'jail' gets a bigger budget and a permanent resident problem.

They're the protagonist in their legal story, though the defendant might describe them differently.

When an appellate court reviews a lower court's decision and basically says "yeah, they got it right." It's the judicial version of giving a thumbs up, which is great if you won below but devastating if you were hoping for a reversal. Ends the case unless you want to appeal even higher, which rarely works.
